REVIEW : “Brand New Beat” on Critical Mass Blog. Oct. 2012

“Kurt Baker pumps out records like old people pump coins into the slot machines at the casino. The only difference is that, unlike the slots, you can almost bet your last nickel that Kurt’s record is gonna be a winner! And he’s made the record of his career with his soon to be released full length, “Brand New Beat”.

“Hit The Ground” kicks things off in high gear. Catchy guitar riffs aplenty, lots of background harmonies and another amazing sing along chorus shows that this guy KNOWS how to write hit after hit. There are your typical power pop gems that Kurt’s known for, like “Everybody Knows”, “Weekend Girls” and “Qualified”. But what may come as a surprise is that there is a nice pair of slow, heart string tugging ballads.

The acoustic ballad “She’s Not Sorry” is one of the best ballads I’ve heard in quite some time. It’s a Dear John letter style song that shows off Kurt’s ability to slow things down and get serious for a little while. Hey, even the biggest party animals have a soft spot. And Kurt’s no different. The way the acoustic guitars and organ play off each other, it’s pure heaven. The other ballad being “How Many Times”, which is piano based and features a 70′s soft rock beat and feel. Again, not something you would expect from a Kurt Baker record. But it’s a pleasant surprise none the less.

This is the album Kurt Baker was born to make. It’s nothing you were expecting and everything you’ve wanted all wrapped up in a tight little package. With his masterpiece upon us, I have to ask…where will Kurt Baker go from here? If the world is listening and there’s room for one more rock star out there, then superstardom isn’t far from reach for this young man.

5 / 5 stars”

“Want You Around” is HERE!

The brand new EP “Want You Around” is here! I could tell you all about it, but a wise old chap from Wisconsin named Rev. Nørb had this to say about it:

Want You Around is the latest offering from rock/punk/pop savant KURT BAKER, and want it around you shall! Sashaying forth five-hundred-strong in an initial pressing on stunning baby blue vinyl, Want You Around features all the power, harmony, and friggin’ savoir faire one’s come to expect from this Maine-based tunesmith. Leading off with a title track dating back to Kurt’s days with the LEFTOVERS, Want You Around ((the record)) wastes little time in titillating the user’s privates with “Want You Around” ((the song)), a power pop epistle of the morse-code-guitars-and-harmonies tenor that sounds like it coulda been someone’s breakout FM hit in 1981, if God were thirty years younger and wore Converse All-Stars instead of sandals. An additional value-add comes in the form of guest vocals by Dan Vapid, who apparently wants you around as well. None can ask fairer than that! The platter is rounded out by lights-out covers of the new wave/power pop classic “News At Ten” by THE VAPORS, the slightly less-classic “Sleeping With The Television On” by BILLY JOEL, and the not-so-much-classic-as-epic “Hollywood” by THIN LIZZY. Trust us: You’ll want this around! – Rev. Nørb
